Dynamic bearing

A dynamic warehouse is defined as a "warehouse with chaotically controlled storage order at changing locations". This system means that the storage location for each good changes. The goods are stored where there is space and are issued where they are needed.

The counterpart to dynamic storage is static storage or the fixed bin system. Here, each item has its own fixed storage location and is not moved until it is removed.

What characterises a dynamic warehouse?

The synonyms of the dynamic warehouse are "free space system" or "chaotic warehouse". Of course, a properly functioning warehouse has nothing to do with hopeless chaos: In its original, ancient Greek meaning, "cháos" means free space. In fact, a dynamic warehouse makes optimal use of free space.

In a dynamic warehouse, there is no fixed storage location for each good. When new goods come in, they are stored dynamically and flexibly at any free location. During the time the goods are in the warehouse, they can either be moved within the shelf. Or the entire shelf is moved, for example on rollers.

When retrieving or selling, all items or order units can be transported to the point where they can best be removed. The principle is called "goods to the man". The advantage: In the dynamic warehouse, the total space is used more flexibly and efficiently. All free spaces are basically available for every incoming good. But a dynamic warehouse also has two disadvantages.

  • The employees are not as quickly familiar with the warehouse locations as with a static warehouse.
  • Without a computerised warehouse management system, "chaos" would indeed result. The EDP assigns each good its place.

Distributing new items accordingly to free storage locations can become a challenge for companies without software. Accordingly, logistics experts who are familiar with dynamic storage are in demand when managing a dynamic warehouse.

What is a dynamic warehouse used for?

Dynamic warehouses are mainly operated as delivery warehouses or warehouses with a high turnover rate in the manufacturing industry or in wholesale. For wholesalers dynamic storage systems The advantages of the new system are evident in so-called fast-moving items such as perishable food, pharmaceuticals or cosmetics.

Dynamic storage is less suitable for hazardous goods or goods with material properties for which special storage is required. Here, fixed storage locations are advantageous. The same applies in specialised trade where the customer is looking for orientation, for example in building or furniture markets.

Fixed storage locations are also suitable for smaller warehouses with a relatively constant number of goods. In addition, dynamic systems are rarely used in the area of museum, theatre or library magazine storage. In short: Whether you choose a dynamic warehouse or fixed storage bins is a question of the types of goods, goods movements and capacities.
