Dynamic bearing



A dynamic warehouse is defined as a „warehouse with chaotically controlled storage organisation at changing locations“. This system means that the storage location for each item changes. The goods are stored where space is available and are issued where they are needed.



The counterpart to dynamic storage is static storage or the fixed bin system. Here, each item has its own fixed storage location and is not moved until it is removed.



What characterises a dynamic storage system?



The synonyms for a dynamic warehouse are „free-space system“ or „chaotic warehouse“. Of course, a perfectly functioning warehouse has nothing to do with chaos: In its original, ancient Greek meaning, „cháos“ means something like free space. In fact, a dynamic warehouse makes optimum use of free space.



In a dynamic warehouse, there is no fixed storage location for each item. When new goods arrive, they are stored dynamically and flexibly at any free location. During the time that the goods are in the warehouse, they can either be moved within the rack. Or the entire shelf can be moved, for example on castors.



When retrieving or selling, all items or order units can be transported to the point at which they can best be removed. The principle is called „goods to the man“. The advantage: in a dynamic warehouse, the total space is utilised more flexibly and efficiently. All free spaces are available for every incoming item. However, a dynamic warehouse also has two disadvantages.




The employees are not familiarised with the warehouse locations as quickly as with a static warehouse.



Without a computerised warehouse management system, chaos would indeed ensue. The computerised system assigns each item its place.




Distributing new items to free storage locations accordingly can be a challenge for companies without software. Managing a dynamic warehouse therefore requires logistics experts who are familiar with dynamic storage.



What is a dynamic warehouse used for?



Dynamic warehouses are primarily used as distribution warehouses or warehouses with a high turnover rate in the processing industry or in wholesale. For wholesalers, dynamic storage systems demonstrate their advantages with fast-moving items such as perishable foods, pharmaceuticals or cosmetics.



Dynamic storage systems are less suitable for hazardous goods or goods with material properties for which specialised storage is required. Fixed storage locations are advantageous here. The same applies to specialised retail where customers are looking for orientation, for example in DIY or furniture stores.



Fixed storage locations are also suitable for smaller warehouses with a relatively constant number of goods. In addition, dynamic systems are rarely used in museum, theatre or library storage areas. In short, whether you choose a dynamic warehouse or fixed storage locations is a question of the types of goods, goods movements and capacities.
