# Cantilever Racking

What is cantilever racking and what is it used for?

A cantilever racking system, or swing-out racking, is a specialised type of heavy-duty racking designed for industrial, logistics or wholesale warehouses. Unlike racking systems with fixed compartments, the compartments can be swung out using a simple mechanism, much like arms. Hence the name „swing-out racking“. The racks are referred to as cantilever arms because, when extended, they ‘cantilever out’, i.e. they protrude beyond the building line or the uprights.

With cantilever arms that swing out in two directions, cantilever racking can be loaded on both sides, for example lengthways and endways or on the left and right. Cantilever racking is often used for long goods. It is used to store a wide variety of long, heavy or lighter goods such as

sheet metal,

stacks of sheet metal,

sections,

tubes,

uprights

or coils.

Are there any specific requirements regarding the location and surroundings where a cantilever racking system is to be installed?

As cantilever racking systems are heavy-duty racking systems subjected to high loads, they should be installed on a level, solid, load-bearing and stable surface. The distance from other racking, stored goods and equipment such as parked forklift trucks must be sufficient to allow the cantilever arms to extend freely and safely. As with all types of heavy-duty racking, the warehouse temperature and humidity should be optimal for the stored goods.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of cantilever racking compared to other types of racking?

The advantages of cantilever racking – in brief:

Ease of use thanks to the simple swivelling out of the shelves

Easy loading and unloading of stored goods, from both sides

Greater efficiency and flexibility in the warehouse, as there is direct access to the stored long goods

A disadvantage of heavy-duty racking of this design is that, in some cases, it may offer less storage space per unit area than traditional long-goods racking or pallet racking with fixed levels. The space is required for the cantilever arms to swing out. Furthermore, when the arms are swung out, the distribution of the heavy loads changes. This can compromise stability and load-bearing capacity.

Can a cantilever racking system be easily extended or adapted?

A cantilever racking system such as ArmStrong® SwingOut from storemaster® can be expanded almost without limit and adapted to the individual requirements of the warehouse, the goods or the premises – whether with cantilever arms and racking that swing out on one side or both sides. The bay heights can be varied from 125 mm to 500 mm, and the depths from 500 mm to 1000 mm for long goods. storemaster® is happy to provide its customers with quotes tailored to their specific requirements.
