# Add-on Shelving Unit

Add-on Shelving Unit – the extension to your basic unit

Which shelving system? … it does matter! Because as soon as a business grows or more stock needs to be stored, additional capacity is required. It makes little sense to place pallet racking, heavy-duty racking or other freestanding basic racking units side by side, especially not if they are from different systems. Companies should opt for expandable add-on racking systems from the outset.

What is the function of an add-on racking bay?

In short: an add-on racking bay is attached to a basic racking bay. It thus supplements the racking system’s storage capacity. A basic racking unit generally consists of a frame and the storage levels for the goods to be stored. If the system is modularly expandable, it has suitable attachment points for adding further racking units.

Unlike the basic unit, each add-on shelving unit has only one side frame. On the other side, it is connected to the basic shelving unit with its shelves and beams. Some shelving systems can also be extended into the room at an angle or across the room, rather than just along the long wall. This allows not only longer, but also wider and bulkier goods to be stored. And the storage space is utilised more efficiently.

It is important that, even with the extension bay, every single compartment remains accessible for the storage and retrieval of goods. Furthermore, the maximum bay and shelf loads must correspond to those of the basic shelving unit. Otherwise, there would be too great a risk that warehouse staff could overload the add-on shelving unit. Correctly distributed load is essential with this add-on plug-in system.

What is an add-on racking unit suitable for?

An add-on racking unit is „perfect for more goods!“. Racking is usually standardised, but warehouses are unique. Modern, standardised racking systems such as the ArmStrong BN, the EuroTower or the ShuttleTower are designed for standard market sizes. But it would be pure coincidence if they were to fill every space in every warehouse to the nearest centimetre or millimetre.

With modular shelving units, the space in the warehouse can be utilised to the full. If the system is designed for this, it can be combined to form rows of shelving of any length or width. As the business grows, the modular shelving system can „grow with it“.
